This iconic flat-topped mountain, visible along the Newcastle-Volksrust road, holds great historical significance. It was here, on 27 February 1881, that the world-famous Battle of Majuba took place. On that day, Boer Commandos under Commandant General Piet Joubert delivered a decisive defeat to British forces led by General Sir George Pomeroy Colley during the First Transvaal War of Independence. This victory ultimately led to the Transvaal regaining its independence from Britain.

Visitors to the site can explore a museum dedicated to the battle and its historical impact. There is also a youth lodge that can accommodate up to 80 young visitors and their accompanying adults, along with a campsite and picnic facilities. A small entrance fee grants access to these amenities, as well as hiking trails leading to the mountain’s summit. From the top, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views stretching in every direction.
